Environmental sustainability

Reducing our impact on the environment and assisting suppliers to do the same, helps us to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and ensure compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. Product environmental performance is also of increasing interest to our customers.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Energy use and related CO2 emissions increased in 2008 due to improved data collection and business acquisitions.
  • Seven of our sites participate in the European Union Emissions trading scheme. In 2009 we transferred 21,830 tonnes of carbon.
  • Efforts to reduce energy use in our businesses this year included a new £1 million partnership with the University of Central Lancashire to develop intelligent energy management systems at BAE Systems’ UK sites.

The reported increase in the Company’s carbon footprint in 2008 reflects improvements in data collection and acquisition activity.

The Coefficient Company has been commissioned to calculate the Company’s 2009 carbon footprint, the results of which were not available at the date of this report.

Scope 1 emissions are fuels brought onto site including gas, coal, oil, aviation fuel, LPG and fuel oil. Scope 2 emissions is electricity. Business travel includes domestic, short and long haul flights, executive cars and hire cars.
